Ask Apache Server If You’ve Got The Nerve

April 16, 2012

HTACCESS FILE KNOW-HOW will do several things for you: Make your website noticeably faster. Allow you to debug your server with ease. Make your life easier and more rewarding. Allow you to work faster and more productively. What Is .htaccess? Specifically, .htaccess is the default file name of a special configuration file that provides a number of directives (commands) for controlling and configuring the Apache Web Server, and also to control and configure modules that can be built into the Apache installation, or included at run-time like mod_rewrite (for htaccess rewrite), mod_alias (for htaccess redirects), and mod_ssl (for controlling SSL connections). Htaccess allows for decentralized management of Web Server configurations which makes life very easy for web hosting companies and especially their savvy consumers. The hosting techs set up and run “server farms” where many hundreds and thousands of web hosting customers are all put on the same Apache Server. This type of hosting is called “virtual hosting” and without .htaccess files would mean that every customer must use the same exact settings as...

Online Tracking By Advertisers May Face Overhaul

December 2, 2010

YOU MAY SOON BE ABLE TO STOP advertisers from tracking your every move online if the Federal Trade Commission’s call for a “Do Not Track” option becomes a reality. An FTC staff report issued Wednesday proposes a simple Web browser mechanism that would allow consumers to review data collected about them, or choose not to be tracked by anyone. Consumer and privacy advocates cheered the news and said they’ll push for quick passage of a federal law mandating a mechanism. The House subcommittee on Commerce, Trade and Consumer Protection holds a hearing today on the matter. “This is a pretty big step forward,” says Ed Mierzwinski, consumer program director at U.S. PIRG, a non-profit consumer-advocacy group. “It sends a very clear message that … only an Internet-wide Do Not Track program will work.” Advertising networks systematically track the websites you visit as part of profiling your online behavior so they can target you to receive specific ads. Google and Microsoft, operators of the two largest ad networks, defend the practice, saying their respective companies...

Improbable Fear Of Apple

Improbable Fear Of Apple

The New York Times is reporting that Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer has recently been at a secret meeting with Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayen to discuss topics including the two companies’ mutual competitor, Apple. The Times says that the companies were investigating ways to partner in order to do battle with Apple. One option was for Microsoft to acquire Adobe, a claim that has seen Adobe’s stock price surge by more than 10 percent. Microsoft is thought to have investigated buying Adobe some years ago, but abandoned the idea with the expectation of running into new antitrust problems. With Apple and Google now such strong competitors, such a purchase may now be a viable option. Regardless of the legal difficulties, a partnership—and, indeed, a Microsoft purchase—makes sense. The common enemy Apple’s increasing importance in the mobile space with its trio of iOS devices, the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad, is a growing threat to both companies. Adobe and Apple butt heads in a number of markets. The two companies have competing software (Adobe’s Lightroom and...

Apple TV Looks Like An Early Winner

October 7, 2010

Dan Frommer of Business Insider has the right notion about the chances of Apple in this faceoff with Google for the TV gadget plug-in. Of course we want Apple to win, but I am doubtful it will dominate like it does the phone and tablet markets. APPLE AND GOOGLE JUST KICKED off the first round of their battle for the living room. Based on what we’ve seen so far, Apple has sprinted into the lead. It’s still early, and this could change, but it looks like Apple is making an all-around smarter bet than Google. To recap what the two companies are doing: Google is introducing a product called “Google TV,” which is initially available as part of a $300 set-top box from Logitech, or as part of a high-end line of TV sets from Sony. It’s trying to become the default way you look for TV shows to watch, hooking up between your cable box and your TV. It’ll let you search the TV listings, web video sites, and will eventually have an...
